Collected Visions
COLLECTED VISIONS, was created by Lorie Novak, Clilly Castiglia, Betsey Kershaw, and Kerry O'Neill. Launched in May 1996, Collected Visions is a participatory Web site that explores the relationship between family photographs and memory.

The most significant aspect of Collected Visions is the ability to submit images to a growing archive of family photographs and create photo stories. Participants can search and view images from the on-line database of more than 1200 images and then create and submit live photographic essays exploring the power of family snapshots. Changing exhibitions of selected submitted essays are presented in the Collected Visions Gallery and then archived in the Collected Visions Museum. Visitors interested in writing about your own snapshots or contributing to the archive can submit them through the site. As of February 1999, approximately 125 photo essays are posted throughout the site.

The concept for Collected Visions grew out of the photographs and installations Lorie Novak has been creating since the early 1980s. She uses family snapshots and images from the media to explore the relationships between personal and collective memory. Excerpts from her past installations provide the backgrounds for the gallery, museum, and bibliography. In addition to the Web site, Lorie Novak is developing a large scale projected video installation that uses snapshots from the CV archive and an audio component that draws upon recordings of people speaking about their family photographs. When installed at museums, viewers will not only be able to see the video installation but also experience the Web site and contribute their own snapshots at a scanner that will be set up at a kiosk (which will be a mirror of the Web site) outside of the installation. The contributed images and stories will be incorporated into the piece as sequences will be created on an ongoing basis. A new video sequence for the installation will be created at each site that will include the snapshots from that particular museum's community.

Collected Visions will remain on the Web through the turn of the century. It is a fitting millennium project - the still photograph has been the dominant pictorial document of this century and may not be of the next. With submissions over a five-year period, Collected Visions and its archive will serve as a testimony to the multiple visions of how we view the snapshot and family photographs at this time in history.
